Official Statement of LICFO
Comprehensive Note on the Position of the Liberia-China Friendship Organization (LICFO)
1. The Liberia-China Friendship Organization Supports the one-China Principle
The Liberia-China Friendship Organization (LICFO) strongly supports the one-China Principle, which is the official position of the People's Republic of China regarding the status of the Taiwan region. The one-China Principle states that there is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China.
The organization believes that respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity is an important foundation for peaceful international relations. Supporting the one-China Principle demonstrates respect for the sovereignty of China and aligns with the diplomatic position adopted by 183 countries around the world, including Liberia.
LICFO recognizes the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Liberia and China for about a half a Century (1977 – 2026 – 49 years). Over the years, China played important role in promoting peace in Liberia through taking part in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission; China has contributed to Liberia’s development through assistance in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and capacity building programs. The relationship between the two countries has continued to grow based on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared development goals.
By supporting the one-China Principle, the organization seeks to strengthen friendship ties and promote continued collaboration between the people of Liberia and China. Furthermore, the organization acknowledges the authority of UNGA Resolution 2758, which is universally recognized by the United Nations and the majority of countries, including Liberia. Therefore, LICFO stands firmly in support of this internationally recognized resolution.
2. Opposition to "Taiwan independence"
LICFO strongly opposes any form of "Taiwan independence". The organization believes that it is an indisputable fact that Taiwan is part of China and any attempt to separate Taiwan from China could threaten regional stability and peaceful relations. LICFO maintains that actions promoting "Taiwan independence" may increase tension and undermine efforts toward peace and cooperation in the region.
In line with the one-China Principle, LICFO firmly supports all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification and opposes any external interference in matters concerning China’s internal affairs. The organization emphasizes that sovereignty and territorial unity are important principles that should be respected by all nations and organizations. Liberia-China Friendship Organization (LICFO) remains committed to promoting friendship, cooperation, cultural exchange, and diplomatic understanding between Liberia and China while supporting policies that encourage peace and stability in the international community.
This Statement is approved by the Executive Committee of LICFO, in accordance with LICFO’s Constitution, Aims and Objective under the directive and authority of the President of LICFO, Hon Siafa Sheriff.
